Summary

A Literature Review on Community Education in a Context of Labour Market Activation, Employability and Active Citizenship in Ireland and the EU.

In 2011, CEFA published its position paper “Community Education; Enhancing Learning, Fostering Empowerment and Contributing to Civic Society” which outlines a clear vision for community education in Ireland. The Department of Education and Skills issued Community Education Operational Guidelines for providers in 2012 which reinforced community education’s position in the education system in Ireland. To build on this work CEFA commissioned Liam Mc Glynn (Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown) to conduct this literature review which has provided some very valuable insights into how community education is meeting the activation challenge in terms of promoting active citizenship and promoting employability.
